HAND WASH ONLY

Richardson’s own guidance is spot-clean or hand-wash with mild detergent (or OxiClean). Skip the washer, dryer, and dishwasher so you don’t wreck the lightly structured crown, pre-curved bill, or rope.

The 258 is 100% polyester with a Stay-Dri sweatband and a braided visor rope, so it handles a gentle soak better than cotton truckers, but heat and twisting still flatten the shape.

HOW-TO HAND WASH

1. Knock off loose dirt. Brush or lint-roll the crown and rope.
2. Mix cool or lukewarm water with a little mild laundry detergent or dish soap. Warm is fine per Richardson; hot is not.
3. Spot the sweatband first. That’s where salt and oil live. Dab soap on stains, wait a few minutes, then scrub gently with a soft toothbrush.
4. Soak 10–15 minutes if the whole hat is dirty. Don’t wring or twist. Go easy on the rope so it doesn’t fuzz.
5. Rinse until the water runs clear. Leftover soap stiffens polyester.
6. Press (don’t wring) in a towel to pull out water.
7. Reshape the crown over a bowl, mug, or balled towel. Keep the bill’s curve. Air dry only, out of sun and away from heaters.
* Sweatband still funky after one wash? A short second pass with a little OxiClean in cool water is what Richardson lists. After it dries, snap it back to size and store it so nothing sits on the crown.
